Apple to replace MacBook Pros with defective video 10:24AM, Monday 13th October 2008
Apple has discovered that some Nvidia graphics processors installed in certain MacBook Pro laptops may be prone to failure, contrary to an earlier assurance by the manufacturer.

Nvidia acknowledged in July that due to a packaging defect it was seeing a higher than normal failure rate for some of their graphics processors, but that Macs were not affected.

Now Apple says that following its own investigation, some MacBook Pro computers with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor may suffer

from distorted or scrambled video or no image whatsoever on the laptop’s own or an external display.

If the Nvidia graphics processor in your MacBook Pro has failed or fails within two years of the original date of purchase, a repair will be done free of charge, even if the Mac is out of warranty.

Affected products comprise MacBook Pro 15in and 17in models with the Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor (MacBook Pro 17in, 2.4GHz, MacBook Pro 15in, 2.4/2.2GHz and MacBook Pro Early 2008), manufactured approximately between May 2007 and September 2008.

If your MacBook Pro is exhibiting any of the symptoms mentioned, take it to an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for evaluation.
